Denali 5500 - "Held all my gear for snow-cave camping with room to spare! Incredibly comfortable and well balanced, hardly even knew it was on my back. Great hiking backpacks at an AMAZING value! Thank you!!" Joseph E.

"After a long hiatus from backpacking, I was thrilled when my sons expressed an interest and were old enough to go with me. One thing that was clear, though, was that some of my ancient hiking backpacks would need to be retired."

Hiking Tips - What You Need to Know - By Mary Bodel

One reason I like hiking is the number of calories it burns over walking. This is even more true if you carry weight or are doing a lot of hill work. When burning calories is the goal, about the only thing better is backpacking. However, there are things you need to know before you head up the trail. Some of these tips are common sense, but not all of them are.

1) Never hike alone. If something untoward happens on the trail, being by yourself can make matters worse. If you have someone with you, they can summon help if you need it and vice versa. This is true even if it's a short hike on a popular trail.

2) Carry a knife. Even if it's the only thing you bring, carry one. It is the most vital tool to have, as it can perform many functions. It can help you cut tender. If you have flint, it can help start a fire. It offers some defense from animals, though that should be at a last resort. There are countless jobs it can do.

3) Carry water: Even if you are going to be walking along a stream, having your own water is a good idea. The water nature provides outdoors may require boiling before ingestion, so clean water is important. If you're hiking with a pet, bring extra for it, especially if you're in an arid place.

4) Bring a first aid kit: Accidents happen, and being prepared is key. There are special kits for hikers, which contains all of the items you may need until you can get to help. You may also want to take a first aid course or read about it so you know what to do in each situation.

5) Carry something that makes loud noise: I carry a whistle, but there are other options available. Not only can it guide help to where you are, it can also scare off some of the animals whose habitat you're walking through.

6) Wear proper attire: The hiking trail is rarely a place for tank tops and shorts. The sun can be a problem, as can branches and shrubbery. Make sure you have a hat, preferably with shading all around your head. This will help keep you from overheating in the summer or getting to cold in the winter. It can also keep ticks out of your hair. A good pair of hiking shoes is also important. These can help prevent you from twisting your ankle and provide traction. Special socks are available that can help prevent sweat from being a problem.

7) Sunscreen: You've heard all the reasons. Adequate sunblock can prevent sunburns and protect your skin from damage by UV rays. You may also want to use insect repellent, and it is possible to buy a product that does both.

8) Use caution if you are wildcrafting: This term applies to anything you might want to ingest, whether it's herbs or fruits and vegetables. Make sure you know for certain what it is and what it does. If you don't know, don't eat it. This also applies to respect to laws. Many parks and wilderness areas have laws that state it's illegal to pick them. You've probably heard it this way: Take only pictures and leave only footprints.

9) Be careful with extremes of weather: If it's very hot or very cold, don't go hiking. Both can cause serious medical conditions, both for you and your pets, if you bring them along.

By following these tips, you can have an enjoyable hike and remain safe and healthy. It's a fun way to exercise and can help reduce stress levels.
