Denali 5500 - "Held all my gear for snow-cave camping with room to spare! Incredibly comfortable and well balanced, hardly even knew it was on my back. Great hiking backpacks at an AMAZING value! Thank you!!" Joseph E.

"After a long hiatus from backpacking, I was thrilled when my sons expressed an interest and were old enough to go with me. One thing that was clear, though, was that some of my ancient hiking backpacks would need to be retired."

Tips For Backpacking With Kids - By Jeremy P. Stanfords

Backpacking can be a great family experience, provided safety guidelines are followed. Kids can gain so much from being in nature, however they can also become hurt or lost easier than an adult. For this reason adults should understand these basic safety tips.

Before leaving the house, parents should rehearse the trip with their children. Explain what they might see and experience on the journey, along with strategies to use in dangerous situations. Talk through what should be done if a child become lost, hurt, or becomes trapped by a wild animal. It may take several conversations before a child understand what to do.

Extended hikes can be tiring to a child that is not used to walking long distances. Begin with shorter adventures and build up to longer treks. For a young child who is still growing it important that proper footwear and backpack equipment is used. The wrong equipment can cause undue strain and exhaustion.

Be sure that children involved have access to water, food, and other supplies. This will help in case anyone becomes separated from the group. A flashlight, compass, map, and communication device will also be necessary equipment. Some parents feel uncomfortable giving kids too many items, yet it can be incredibly important if an emergency happens.

If infants or toddlers will be on the nature walk, parents should take extra care to ensure they have the proper equipment. Young children require additional gear, such as diapers and special bags for storing dirty ones. Young toddlers and infants also need to be carried more, so special equipment may be required. There are several styles of carriers that are made to be worn like a backpack. These can be very useful on long trips.

Parents need to be sure they have sunscreen, insect repellent, and additional clothing for their kids. Carelessness can lead to physical harm more easily in a young child than in an adult. Hats, sunglasses, and thick socks should be brought along to help protect kids from the elements and any dangers they may encounter.

Though hiking in nature can be thrilling for some adults, children often need additional stimulation. Inviting other children or another family along can make the day more enjoyable for everyone. Parents should also allow kids some degree of control over the trek, such as choosing when to break and what sights to enjoy. This will make kids feel more involved and more likely to enjoy the experience.

With care, backpacking with kids can be an enjoyable and safe experience for everyone.
